Your sleep thief
The Restless Body
You fall asleep, then spend the night shifting, flipping, and fluffing. In the morning your neck is stiff, a shoulder aches, or an arm has gone numb.
Why this happens
Every time you get uncomfortable, your brain lifts out of deep sleep to make you move. You may not remember it, but it adds up to lighter, broken sleep.
After 40, joints and muscles take longer to recover, and the pillow that was fine at 30 may no longer keep your neck in line with your spine. Small changes to how you're supported can make a big difference.
Try these tonight
- Check your pillow height. Side sleepers need enough height to fill the gap between ear and shoulder. Back sleepers need less. Your nose should line up with the center of your chest.
- Hug a pillow if you sleep on your side. It keeps your top shoulder from rolling forward, a common cause of morning shoulder pain.
- Put a pillow between your knees. It keeps your hips level and takes pressure off your lower back.
- Stretch for five minutes before bed. Gentle neck rolls, shoulder circles, and a chest stretch in a doorway release the tension your body carries into bed.
- Replace a pillow that's gone flat. Fold it in half. If it doesn't spring back open, it's no longer supporting you.
If you want to try something more
We may earn a commission if you buy through this link. It doesn't change the price you pay, and we only list one option per sleep thief. How we choose.
- What it is
- The Derila Ergo is a butterfly-shaped memory foam pillow with a contoured neck area, designed for side and back sleepers.
- Why it fits your result
- Your result points to support and comfort, and a pillow is the simplest thing to change first. No pills involved.
- Worth knowing
- Returns are accepted within 60 days, but you pay return shipping and the pillow should be in resellable condition, so read the return terms before ordering. The checkout offers add-ons like covers and extra pillows. You only need one pillow to find out if it works for you.
